Micah’s thoughts scrambled just as his body fought to maintain his balance. He sensed the man’s hatred, like an icy blanket threatening to smother him. Steel rang against steel as Micah continued to block each blow, backing away. He had to go on the offensive, he had to turn the rhythm of the fight away from Robert’s advantage and to his own.
But Robert’s sword continued to dictate Micah’s moves. A building detonated in a firestorm beside them. Hot embers struck Micah’s face and he battled to suck in a breath but inhaled only smoke. He recoiled and gagged.
Robert’s sword slammed into his right arm, destroying his armor, cutting flesh and cracking bone.
Micah roared in agony, launching himself backward just as he lost his grip on his sword. Suddenly he found himself flat on his back, behind the buildings, away from the heat and smoke, with Robert standing over him, his sword raised for the death stroke.
Micah rolled and heard a muted thud of steel plowing into rock. But the ground canted away from him and he started to slide. Micah blinked his blurred vision clear. The ravine! Dear God he had made a foolish error. He had lost his position on the battlefield and would now pay the price. He clawed at the earth with his left hand, stopping his fall. His legs dangled over the edge. Micah battled to pull himself forward but his injured arm was useless. He snarled in pain and fury.
Robert hesitated, a slow smile tugging at his lips. “Now this is interesting.” He stepped forward, methodically, and raised his sword.
Micah’s throat went dry, he urgently cast for a way to escape, but his only choice was to hold on and face Robert’s sword, or let go and plunge into the ravine. His gaze stopped on a large root protruding from the ravine wall. It was about four feet down and two feet to his left. It was as thick as his arm and below it the ground thrust outward slightly forming a small ledge. It would be a desperate gamble that had little chance of succeeding. He looked back at Robert who continued his death march.
Micah’s gaze returned to the root. He took a deep breath and jumped.

I don't believe there is a synopsis of this book anywhere right now, so I will try to provide a brief one:When Micah de Montfort's uncle, the man that raised him, tries to kill Micah in his rebellion against King Henry, Micah's faith in family and love are destroyed. Two years later, now a loyal knight to Henry in his attempt to make up for his family's history, Micah is ordered to take back Appleby Castle from the Scots who raided and captured it, killing Baron Liulf and his family. Micah is surprised to find that the Baron's only daughter, Kate, is alive, but had been imprisoned in the dungeon and badly mistreated. Micah helps Kate recover, both physically and emotionally, but Kate's existence threatens the barony that King Henry promised to him. Henry gives Micah the choice to send Kate to a convent and take the barony himself or marry Kate. Not wanting to imprison and betray Kate again, they agree to marry, but Micah continues to battle the emotional demons from his past. As Micah and Kate learn to care for each other, Micah begins to wonder if his dreams of love and family could possibly come true after all if he could learn to have faith in others again. But the Scots plot to regain the castle and Kate and there is a traitor in their midst.
So that was the first synopsis I ever wrote. Hope I did a good job. :)
This one wasn't as emotive as Blind Impulse (which is the first book I read by Kathryn Loch and which I loved), but it was still an entertaining and enjoyable read.
Based on this book and BI, I would say that Kathryn Loch builds her stories around strong emotions, and that's where the strength lies. In this one it was Micah's feeling of betrayal by a man he loved and his struggle to overcome it. The intrigue with the Scots kept the plot moving along, but it was the emotion that added the depth and feeling to make the story something more.

I love it when the author develops the characters and plot in such a way that I become invested in the main characters and root for them. These characters felt real. I really liked Micah's character and understand his inner turmoil over feelings of betrayal from his family. He could be strong, but also showed that he was sensitive, especially as he interacts with Kate and takes her fate into consideration within the framework of his own personal choices. (Katherine is the young woman Micah rescues when he takes back control of her castle after the Scots who killed her family & imprisoned her flee.) I was sad to see the story end, which is always a sign to me that I enjoyed the story. I have never read any stories by this author and would recommend this to a friend.
This is the third book I have read by this author and REALLY enjoyed it. Its grips you from the very first page. Read it in one day, and was disappointed it was over so fast. lol I have got to learn how to savor my books!! ;)
The hero is a man tormented my betrayal by those he thought loved him. He shuts himself off and tells himself love doesn't exist. Regardless, of his tragic past he is a kind and compassionate man. The heroine's story may be even more tragic than the hero's. She's horrifically abused for a year after being the sole survivor of her family that was murdered. The hero helps her heal both mentally and physically. The heroine falls in love with the hero fairly quickly, and is determined to help heal his soul so he can believe in love again.
Don't miss this amazing love story. It has everything you could ever want in a medieval romance.
Happy reading ;)
This is the first book I've read by this author, and I loved it! As a matter of fact, I loved it book so much I immediately started reading another of her books right after I finished this one....."Heart's Ransom". I just started reading that book, but I'm already loving it.
Anyhow, back to this book. "By Any Other Name" is a shining example of how a medieval romance book should be written. The book is well written, the plot fast paced and enthralling, and the characters are all very relatable. I really loved Micah and Kate. Micah is the quintessential tortured hero. Kate is smart, independent, courageous, and loving. She is the perfect woman for Micah. Through her constant love and devotion to Micah she is finally able break down the barriers he's put up over the years and win his heart.
The story is chock full of excitement, what with sword fights, poisoning, betrayal, and a Scottish plot to regain Appleby Castle by any means necessary. I highly recommend this book as a very worthwhile read! Thanks for the hours of enjoyment, Ms. Loch!
